The central value of EMMA’s strategy is courage 

Courage is the central value of EMMA’s strategy, and this is reflected in the way the museum in its programme dares to bring forth the voices of otherness, and many different points of view. One example of this is the exhibition programme of 2018: Meret Oppenheim was a strong artist, who at a very early stage in her career brought forth feminist ways of thinking and questions of gender neutrality. Outi Pieski, in her art deals with questions of minority culture and the position of the Sami people. In collection acquisitions and collection exhibitions, you can also find the theme of fairness, and multifaceted value discussions, as far as the art collection of Saastamoinen Foundation and EMMA’s own art collection are concerned. In 2018, we take up for example the refugee question, through Jan Ijäs’ work Medusa’s Raft, as well as structures related to race, gender, religion, profession and class, through the work of the South African artist Candice Breitz, Profile. As for our audience work, for the third year in a row we are continuing the project The Museum as a Sanctuary, in which we strive to give a meaning to the everyday life of the asylum seekers and to facilitate their integration into our society.

With its activity, EMMA at a wide scale strives to address different kinds of audiences and to meet the needs of as many people interested in art as possible. We take upon ourselves, in all our museum activity, to encourage and emphasize discourses that reveal and break down structures of inequality.  Whether the question is about the rights of different population groups or of influencing the attitude climate, as an institution we are courageous and take a stand for fairness.

We minimise economic inequalities and protect the basic structures of the society of well being

EMMA pays royalties for the work the artists do. We work in ways that support the artist’s income, and we will, during 2018, elaborate a detailed guideline, comprising all the activities of the museum, for the criteria of paying the artists working in the museum (meeting allowances, hanging of works, consultation, exhibition royalties and work related to the acquisition process).

We have consciously increased the use of expert services provided by artists in different kinds of ways, for example in expert statements, at public events, in art workshops, through commissioned works, and so on. EMMA’s new form of activity is the commissioning of works together with Saastamoinen Foundation and The City of Espoo, as well as the acquisition of conceptual works for the EMMA collection, which creates the possibility of a more multifaceted acquisition policy than before, and an experimental platform for new forms of art.

We want to make it possible also for those who don’t have the economic means for it to experience culture and art. One evening a week, the exhibition centre WeeGee can be visited without having to pay the entrance fee. In addition, we offer events free of charge, where, apart from the exhibitions, you can experience performances and have the possibility to participate. The exhibition centre WeeGee has in use the Kaiku Card which, in cooperation with the Espoo Social Bureau, is admitted to the less well-to-do, and by which you can experience art and culture for free. EMMA participates actively in KULPS!, the culture and sports path which forms part of Espoo’s primary education, and which makes it possible for every school child to experience culture at least once every term.

We are actively working for freedom of speech and expression 

EMMA as a museum is a platform for different kinds of artists, which means we respect the contents the artists create and their artistic freedom of expression. The museum’s curatorial role is reciprocal and discussional.

We concentrate our collection acquisitions also on the work of young artists, and are open to new art phenomena and messages.

It is important for us to be conscious of the power of the institution and the choices it makes, and to critically examine our own ways of acting. In 2016 EMMA initiated a developing project concerning the influence of art, in which the museum reflects on the ethical principles of its own activity, and how they can be discerned in our different activities.

In our communication, we bring forth marginal themes, believing that EMMA can act as an opinion-former, working for fairness and equality. As one way of making a difference, we consider the discussions and discussion seminars of EMMA Talks, which throw light on current themes in all their multifacetedness.

 In the evaluation of our activity we use indicators of quality and influentiality

Every year, at EMMA we make an evaluation of our influentiality, in which we also evaluate the quality factors. These are measured through the feedback of visitors and through media contents. The exhibition and collection projects end in a final evaluation, where we analyse the final results and the initial goals of the project, from many different angles.

As regards its personnel, in its activity EMMA has a plan for equality and non-discrimination, the realization of which we evaluate yearly. In the future, we are going to have systematic feedback discussions with interest groups and artists. In the future we strive to develop instruments by which we can measure our activity also from the point of view of the globally sustainable development and the environment.

EMMAN strategian keskeinen arvo on rohkeus 

Rohkeus on EMMAn strategian keskeinen arvo ja se heijastuu uskalluksena tuoda toiseuden ääniä ja moninaisia näkökulmia esiin museon ohjelmistossa.

Esimerkkinä tästä ovat vuoden 2018 näyttelyt: Meret Oppenheim, oli vahva taiteilija, joka hyvin varhaisessa vaiheessa toi taiteellaan esille feminististä ajattelua ja sukupuolettomuuden kysymyksiä. Outi Pieski käsittelee taiteessaan vähemmistökulttuuriin ja saamelaisten asemaan liittyviä kysymyksiä. Myös kokoelmahankinnoissa ja -näyttelyissä oikeudenmukaisuuden teemat ja monimuotoiset arvokeskustelut näkyvät Saastamoisen säätiön taidekokoelman ja EMMAn oman kokoelman osalta . Vuonna 2018 esiin nostetaan esimerkiksi pakolaiskysymystä Jan Ijäksen teoksessa Medusan lautta sekä rotuun, sukupuoleen, uskontoon, ammattiin ja luokkaan liittyviä rakenteita eteläafrikkalaisen Candice Breitzin teoksessa Profile.

Yleisötyön saralla jatkamme jo kolmatta vuotta Turvapaikkana museo -hankkeessa, missä pyrimme antamaan sisältöä turvapaikanhakijoiden arkeen ja helpottamaan kotoutumista yhteiskuntaamme.

EMMA pyrkii toiminnallaan puhuttelemaan laajasti eri yleisöjä ja vastaamaan mahdollisimman monen taiteesta kiinnostuneen tarpeisiin. Sitoudumme kaikessa museon toiminnassa edistämään ja korostamaan diskursseja, jotka paljastavat ja purkavat epätasa-arvoisia rakenteita. Oli kysymys erilaisten väestöryhmien oikeuksista tai asenneilmapiiriin vaikuttamisesta, instituutiona olemme rohkea ja otamme kantaa oikeudenmukaisuuden puolesta.

Vähennämme taloudellista epätasa-arvoa ja turvaamme hyvinvointivaltion perusrakenteet

EMMA maksaa korvauksen taiteilijoiden tekemästä työstä. Toimimme taiteilijoiden toimeentuloa edistävin tavoin ja tulemme vuoden 2018 aikana tekemään koko museon toiminnot läpileikkaavan, yksityiskohtaisen ohjenuoran taiteilijan museossa tekemän työn maksuperusteista (k

okouspalkkiot, ripustus, konsultointi, näyttelykorvaus ja hankintaprosessiin liittyvät työt).

Olemme tietoisesti lisänneet taitelijoiden asiantuntijapalveluiden käyttöä eri tavoin muun muassa asiantuntijapuheenvuoroissa, yleisötilaisuuksissa, taidepajoissa, tilausteoksissa jne. EMMAn uusi toimintamuoto on Saastamoisen Säätiön ja Espoon kaupungin kanssa tehtävät tilausteokset sekä konseptiteokset EMMA-kokoelman hankintoina, mikä mahdollistaa aiempaa monipuolisemman hankintapolitiikan ja kokeilevan alustan uusille taiteen muodoille.

Haluamme mahdollistaa kulttuurin ja taiteen kokemisen myös niille, joilla ei ole siihen taloudellisia mahdollisuuksia. Näyttelykeskus WeeGeellä on käytössä pääsymaksuista vapaa ilta kerran viikossa. Lisäksi tarjoamme Ilmaisia tapahtumia, joissa näyttelyiden lisäksi on koettavana esittävää taidetta ja mahdollisuus osallistua. Näyttelykeskus WeeGeellä on käytössä Espoon sosiaalitoimen kanssa yhteistyössä myönnettävä vähävaraisten Kaikukortti, jolla pääsee ilmaiseksi kulttuurin ja taiteen pariin. EMMA on aktiivisesti mukana Espoon perusopetuksen Kulttuuri- ja liikuntapolku KULPS!issa, joka mahdollistaa kulttuurin kokemisen vähintään kerran lukukaudessa jokaiselle espoolaiselle peruskoululaiselle.

Toimimme aktiivisesti sanan- ja ilmaisunvapauden puolesta

EMMA on museona erilaisten taiteilijoiden areena, joten kunnioitamme taiteilijoiden tekemiä sisältöjä ja taiteellista ilmaisuvapautta. Museon kuraatoriaalinen rooli on vastavuoroinen ja keskusteleva.

Kohdistamme kokoelmahankintoja myös nuorten taiteilijoiden teoksiin ja olemme avoimia uusille taiteen ilmiöille ja viesteille.

Instituution vallan ja valintojen tiedostaminen ja omien toimintatapojen kriittinen tarkastelu on meille tärkeää. Aloitimme vuonna 2016 EMMAssa taiteen vaikuttavuuden kehittämishankkeen, jossa museo pohtii oman toimintansa etiikkaa ja sen näkymistä eri toiminnoissaan.

Nostamme viestinnässämme marginaalissa olevia asioita esille uskoen, että EMMA voi toimia mielipidevaikuttajana oikeudenmukaisuuden ja tasa-arvon puolesta. Yhtenä vaikuttamismuotona näemme EMMA Talks – keskustelut ja -keskusteluseminaarit, jotka nostavat näkyväksi ajankohtaisia teemoja monimuotoisuudessaan.

Käytämme toimintamme arvioinnissa laadun ja merkittävyyden mittareita

Vuosittain EMMAssa tehdään vaikuttavuuden arviointi, jossa arvioidaan myös laadullisia tekijöitä. Näitä mitataan kävijäpalautteella ja median sisältöjen kautta. Näyttely- ja kokoelmaprojektit päättyvät loppuarviointiin, jossa analysoidaan projektin lopputuloksia ja asetettuja tavoitteita useasta näkökulmasta.

Henkilöstön osalta EMMAlla on toiminnassa oleva tasavertaisuus- ja yhdenvertaisuussuunnitelma, jonka toteutumista arvioidaan vuosittain.

Tulevaisuudessa tulemme systemaattisesti käymään palautekeskusteluita sidosryhmien ja taiteilijoiden kanssa. Pyrimme kehittämään tulevaisuudessa mittareita, millä mittaamme toimintaamme myös globaalin kestävän kehityksen ja ympäristön näkökulmasta.
